Timber used for garden edging is in constant contact with the ground and must be able to withstand damp and attack by insects. Softwoods that have been treated to withstand attack by insects, fungi and damp, are suitable for garden edges.
Preservative-treated softwoods have been treated with compounds of copper, chromium and arsenate (CCA) and they are given a rating of between H1 and H6, according to their hazard level (H1 is the least durable and, therefore, the least hazardous). This rating is branded on the timber. Always wear gloves when handling this material and a dustmask when sawing it. Do not burn any offcuts as the smoke and ash are also toxic.
When using treated timber as garden edging, select timber with at least an H4 rating. If you cut the timber, the new surfaces will have to be resealed with preservative to ensure resistance to attack.
